Presentation of Mouvement Wallonie Libre

On 3 February 2007, the Board of the Mouvement Wallonie Libre (Movement Free Wallonia) adopted the manifeste de Wallonie libre (Manifesto of Free Wallonia). The movement calls for the "liberation from the domination by Flanders, its lackeys and its accomplices", "the separation from Belgium" and "the independence of a Walloon democratic state". The possible links with France and the status of Brussels are considered as pending.

The Mouvement Wallonie Libre was founded on 18 June 1940 as the first anti-German resistance movement in Belgium. After the war, the Movement contributed to the emergence of the Walloon identity, taking part to the National Walloon Congress and supporting the big strike of winter 1960-1961.
As can be guessed from the phraseology of its manifesto and other texts, the Mouvement Wallonie Libre represents the radical wing of the Walloon movements.

The Mouvement Wallonie Libre organizes every year a meeting near the Monument de l'aigle blessé in Plancenoit, on the Waterloo battlefield, commemorating the meeting of its first members in 1940 - the injured eagle commemorated by the monument being, of course, Emperor Napoléon I. A photography taken there on 17 June 2007 shows the flag of the Mouvement Wallonie Libre as similar to the flag of Wallonia, yellow with the red coq hardi, with the red lettering "WALLONIE LIBRE" surmonting the rooster. The flag has a golden fringe, not shown on the attached image.
